by car

From the nearest interchange “Gokayama”, it takes less than five minutes to arrive. But if the snow doesn’t prevent you, we recommend exiting at the previous interchange “Johana”, taking the local roads, and enjoying views of the mountain-ringed village of Gokayama as you approach.

You might encounter early spring snow and young leaves, vibrant new green bursting with life, the deep green of midsummer, the autumn colors, and even snow falling on the autumn leaves. During snowy seasons when roads may close, plan a flexible itinerary.

by public transport

If you don’t have a car, take a Shinkansen, get off at Shin-Takaoka Station, then board the World Heritage Bus.

Enjoy the distant and nearby mountain views as you ride to the nearest bus stop. From there, it’s just a 2-minute walk to Essai.

Place

Essai is located within a cottage-style property just off a national highway.
The rooms are on the second floor. Open the shoji screens of this building, formerly a community center, and enjoy a generous view of the courtyard. The sight overlooking the courtyard will surely soothe your heart. In spring, cherry blossoms will welcome you. Don’t miss the modest splendor of dogwoods and hydrangeas.
